Houseboat house rules template

Staying on a houseboat means water on every side, a marine toilet that blocks easily, limited fresh water and power, and neighbours in the next slip. Most rules are about safety on deck and looking after the boat's systems.

This template covers the standard Airbnb rules, then houseboat requests with a short reason for each. It assumes the boat stays moored; if guests can take it out, add your own operating rules.

The template

Replace anything in [brackets] with your own details.

Check-in and checkout

  • Check-in from [Check-in time]. Checkout by [Checkout time].
  • The houseboat is at [Marina name], slip [Slip number]. Parking is [Parking info].

Guests and noise

  • The houseboat sleeps [Max guests] guests. For safety, please don't bring more people aboard than [Max people aboard].
  • Quiet hours are [Quiet hours start] to [Quiet hours end]. Sound carries over water, and neighbours are only a slip away.
  • No parties or events, please. The marina doesn't allow them.

Pets, smoking and photos

  • Pets: [Pet rule].
  • No smoking or vaping inside the cabin. If you smoke on deck, please use the ashtray and never flick anything into the water.
  • No commercial photography or filming without our OK.

On board

  • Life jackets are [Life jacket location]. Children and weak swimmers should wear one on deck and on the dock.
  • Please don't swim from the boat or the marina. [Swim note]
  • Wear non-slip shoes on deck, and hold the rail when stepping on and off.
  • The marine toilet: please put only toilet paper in it, and only a little. Anything else blocks it.
  • Fresh water is limited to a [Tank size] tank, so short showers please.
  • Power comes from shore. Please use one high-power item at a time. [Breaker location]
  • Please follow the marina rules posted at [Marina rules location].

Locking up

  • Lock the cabin door when you go ashore and at checkout.

Before you go

  • Put used dishes in the sink.
  • Gather used towels in [Towel spot].
  • Sort trash and recycling into the bins aboard.
  • Turn off lights and the heat or AC, and close the hatches and windows.
  • Lock up and return the key [Key return spot].

Thanks for staying on the water!

Questions

Can houseboat guests take the boat out?

Only if you allow it and they meet the licensing rules where you are. Most moored houseboat rentals stay at the dock, so say that clearly.

How do I explain a marine toilet to guests?

Keep it simple: only a little toilet paper, nothing else, and how to flush. Put the same steps on a card in the washroom.

What safety rules does a houseboat need?

Life jackets for children and weak swimmers, non-slip shoes, holding the rail on and off, and no swimming from the boat if it isn't safe. Give a reason with each.
