House rule reminder message template for Airbnb hosts
Guests break house rules mostly because they didn't read them. A friendly reminder that names the rule, gives the reason and asks for one simple fix is usually all it takes.
Only remind guests of rules that are in your listing: guest numbers, quiet hours, events, pets, smoking and vaping, commercial photography and locking up, plus any short, reasonable requests you've listed. If you're sending a lot of these, the rule may need to be clearer in your listing and welcome book.

Friendly reminder
Hi [Guest first name],
Hope you're having a good stay! Just a quick note: [What you heard, e.g. a neighbour mentioned smoking on the back deck].
Our house rules ask guests [Rule, e.g. not to smoke or vape anywhere on the property], because [Short reason, e.g. the smell lingers for the next guests].
Thanks so much for helping with this. Let me know if you need anything.

Firmer reminder
Hi [Guest first name],
I'm following up on my earlier message about [Rule]. I've [How you know, e.g. had another report from the neighbour], so it seems it's still happening.
This is part of the house rules you agreed to when you booked, so I need to ask you to [Specific fix, e.g. stop smoking on the property for the rest of your stay].
If it continues, I'll have to report it to [Platform], and any extra cleaning or repair costs would be requested through [Platform].
Thanks for understanding.

Tips
- Name the rule, give a one-line reason and ask for one specific fix.
- Stick to rules in your listing; don't invent new ones partway through a stay.
- Send reminders in the platform messages so there's a record if you need it later.
- Give the friendly version time to work before sending the firmer one, unless it's a safety issue.
- Never threaten fines the guest didn't agree to; any costs go through the platform.

Questions
What house rules can I enforce on Airbnb?
The ones in your listing: maximum guests, quiet hours, events, pets, smoking, commercial photography and locking up, plus reasonable extra requests you've listed. Guests agree to them when they book.
Can I charge a guest for breaking a house rule?
You can't add fines on your own. If breaking the rule caused damage or extra cleaning, document it and request the costs through the platform's resolution process.
Should I remind guests of the house rules before they arrive?
A short line in the pre-arrival message pointing to the rules helps. Save specific reminders for when something actually comes up.
