Swimming pool instructions for guests (template)
A private pool has no lifeguard, so the instructions do the job a sign at a public pool would. Guests need the depth, how the gate and cover work, where the safety gear is and what to do if someone gets into trouble.
This template keeps the tone friendly while being clear about children, diving and drinking. Fill in your depths, gate details and the address guests should give emergency services.
The template
Replace anything in [brackets] with your own details.
About the pool
- The pool is [Heated / not heated] and open [Months or season].
- Depth: [Shallow end depth] at the shallow end and [Deep end depth] at the deep end.
- Pool lights: [Light switch location]. Heater: [Heater controls, or "please leave as set"].
Getting in and out
- The pool gate is [Gate location]. It closes and latches on its own. Please don't prop it open.
- Cover: [How to open and close the pool cover, or "there's no cover"].
- Please leave the cover closed and the gate latched when nobody is swimming.
Safety
- There's no lifeguard. Children must be watched by an adult at all times, within arm's reach for young children and weak swimmers.
- Please don't dive. [Pool depth note, e.g. the pool isn't deep enough for diving anywhere].
- Please don't swim after drinking alcohol, and never swim alone.
- No glass in the pool area. Plastic cups are in [Location].
- Stay away from the drains and suction outlets, and keep long hair tied up.
- Please get out of the water if you hear thunder or see lightning.
- Pool chemicals are locked in [Location]. Please don't touch them.
Safety gear
- Life ring and pole: [Location].
- Life jackets for children: [Sizes and location].
- First aid kit: [Location].
If something goes wrong
- If someone is in trouble, get them out, call [Local emergency number] and give this address: [Address].
- Water looks cloudy, green or smells strongly: please stay out and text [Host name] at [Host phone].
- Pump noise or a leak: text us. You don't need to touch the equipment.
Copied. Paste it into your welcome book or message.
Tips
- Write the address for emergency services right in the pool section, not only at the front of the book.
- Check the gate self-closes and latches before every stay.
- Store pool chemicals locked away from guests and children.
- Say how deep the pool is in plain numbers; 'not for diving' is clearer with a depth.
- Keep a life ring and a reaching pole beside the pool, and say where they are.

Questions
Do I need a fence around my rental pool?
Pool fencing rules depend on where you are, so check with your local council or municipality. A self-closing, self-latching gate is widely recommended either way.
Can I ban diving in my Airbnb pool?
Yes. Asking guests not to dive is a reasonable safety request, especially in a pool that isn't deep enough.
Should I provide life jackets?
Child sizes are a thoughtful extra for families. Tell guests where they are and that they're not a replacement for an adult watching.
