Beach gear instructions for guests (template)
A shed full of chairs, umbrellas and boogie boards saves guests packing half their car. Telling them what's there, what's for the beach and what isn't, and where it all goes afterwards keeps your bath towels out of the sand.
This template lists the gear, explains putting up an umbrella so it doesn't fly away, covers sun, swimming, children and rip currents, and points guests to the outdoor shower and storage when they're back. Fill in your gear list and your beach's rules.

Replace anything in [brackets] with your own details.
What we have for you
- [Gear list, e.g. four chairs, an umbrella, a cooler, a wagon, sand toys, two boogie boards]
- Beach towels are in [Beach towel location]. Please use these rather than the bath towels.
- It's all in [Gear location]. [Lock note, e.g. code Shed code].
Setting up the umbrella
- Push the pole well down into the sand, twisting as you go.
- Tilt it into the wind.
- If it gets gusty, please close it and take it down. A loose umbrella can hurt someone.
On the beach
- Swim near a lifeguard where there is one, and check the flags: [Flag meanings at your beach].
- Keep young children within arm's reach in the water. Life jackets for children are in [Life jacket location].
- If you're caught in a rip current pulling you out, don't fight it. Swim parallel to the shore until you're out of the pull, or float and wave for help.
- Bring water, sunscreen and shade. The sun can be strong even when it's cool and cloudy.
- Local beach rules: [Beach rules, e.g. dogs, fires, alcohol, parking].
When you get back
- Rinse off at [Outdoor shower or tap location].
- Shake out the sand, then return chairs and toys to [Gear location]. Hang wet towels on [Towel line location].

Tips
- Keep beach towels a different colour from bath towels so guests know which is which.
- Include a few child life jackets in common sizes if you're near open water.
- Write in your beach's actual flag system and rules; they differ between beaches.
- Replace umbrellas with bent ribs or worn anchors before they turn into flying hazards.
- Add an outdoor tap or shower and a hook rack to keep sand out of the house.

Questions
What beach gear should a vacation rental provide?
Chairs, an umbrella, a cooler, beach towels and a few sand toys cover most guests. A wagon helps if the beach is a walk away.
How do you escape a rip current?
Don't swim against it. Swim parallel to the shore until you're out of the current, or float and signal for help.
How do I keep beach sand out of my rental?
Add an outdoor shower or tap, a boot tray and a hook rack by the door, and provide separate beach towels.
