Outdoor shower instructions for guests (template)
An outdoor shower is a favourite at beach houses, lake cottages and cabins, and guests have a few practical questions: how long does the hot water take, can I use my shampoo, does it work in October?
This template answers those questions, gives a short soap note for showers that drain onto the ground and covers slippery boards and freezing weather. Fill in your taps and the season it's open.
The template
Replace anything in [brackets] with your own details.
When it's open
- The outdoor shower is at [Location] and open [Months or season, e.g. May to October].
- [Closed for the season: the water is turned off to stop the pipes freezing. Please use the indoor shower].
Using the shower
- Hot water: [Tap or handle, e.g. the left tap]. Cold water: [Tap or handle].
- Turn on the hot first and give it [Number] seconds to warm up, then add cold until it's comfortable.
- Please test the temperature with your hand before stepping in, especially for children.
- The door latch is [How it latches, e.g. the hook on the inside].
Soap and shampoo
- The shower drains [onto the ground / into a gravel pit / into the septic system].
- [If it drains to the ground: please use the biodegradable soap and shampoo we provide at [Location], as other products can harm the plants and soil].
Good to know
- The decking can be slippery. Please walk carefully, and supervise children.
- Towel hooks: [Location]. Beach towels: [Location].
- [Rinse station for sand: e.g. the foot tap by the steps].
- Please turn the taps off fully after your shower.
- In the evening, the light switch is [Light switch location].
Privacy
- [Privacy note, e.g. the shower is screened from the neighbours, but the upper deck can see in, so swimwear is a good idea].
If something goes wrong
- No hot water: wait a few minutes in case someone indoors has just used it, then text [Host name] at [Host phone].
- A dripping tap, a broken latch or water pooling: let us know and we'll fix it.
- If you hear thunder, please come inside.
Copied. Paste it into your welcome book or message.
Tips
- Say exactly when the shower opens and closes for the season, so guests don't expect it in winter.
- Provide biodegradable soap if the water drains onto the ground.
- Use non-slip boards or mats and check them for rot every season.
- Fit a scald-limiting valve so the hot tap can't run dangerously hot.
- Be honest about privacy; mention any window or deck that looks in.

Questions
Can guests use regular shampoo in an outdoor shower?
If the water drains straight onto the ground, biodegradable products are a kinder choice. Providing them makes it easy for guests.
When should I shut off an outdoor shower for winter?
Before the first hard freeze where you are, by turning off the supply and draining the lines. Tell guests in the manual that it's closed for the season.
Does an outdoor shower need hot water?
Not always, but guests love it. If it's cold only, say so in the listing and the house manual.
