Emergency info for guests in Canada (rental template)

Most guests in Canada know 911, but visitors from Europe or Asia may not, and almost nobody knows that 811 reaches a nurse in most provinces. Poison centres and police non-emergency lines are provincial or local, so this template leaves those for you to fill in.

We checked these numbers in November 2026, but services change, so please confirm them locally before you print or share the page.

Replace anything in [brackets] with your own details.

If anyone is hurt or in danger, please call 911 first, then let us know.

If something happens

  • Fire: get everyone out, close doors behind you and call 911 from outside. Please don't go back in for belongings.
  • Gas smell: don't switch lights or appliances on or off and don't light a flame. Open doors and windows if it's safe, leave, then call [Gas utility emergency line] or 911 from outside.
  • Carbon monoxide alarm: get everyone into fresh air straight away and call 911, even if nobody feels unwell. Don't go back in until you're told it's safe.
  • Water leak: turn off the water at [Water shut-off location]. If water is near outlets or appliances, stay clear of them and call us.
  • Power out: check whether neighbours are dark too, then check the breaker panel at [Breaker panel location]. Flashlight: [Flashlight location]. Please avoid candles. Report outages to [Power company outage line].
  • Lost keys or locked out: call [Host phone], or [Backup contact name and phone]. Please don't climb in through a window.

Good to know in Canada

  • Emergency alerts for wildfires, floods and severe weather come straight to most phones. Please follow any evacuation order.
  • Winter: if you warm up a car, make sure the exhaust pipe isn't blocked by snow, and never run it in a closed garage.
  • [Local note, e.g. bears: please keep food and garbage inside]

Questions

What is the emergency number in Canada?

911 reaches police, fire and ambulance everywhere in Canada. It's free from any phone.

What is 811 in Canada?

In most provinces and territories, 811 connects you to a registered nurse for non-urgent health advice. It's a good first call when you aren't sure whether you need a hospital.

Should a cottage welcome book include GPS coordinates?

Yes. Rural addresses can be hard for dispatchers to find, so coordinates and a landmark help an ambulance reach you faster.
