Emergency info for guests in the UK (rental template)
Visitors to the UK often don't know 999, and few know that 105 reports a power cut or that one free number covers gas emergencies across Great Britain. Northern Ireland has its own gas emergency line, so check it if your place is there.
We checked these numbers in November 2026, but services change, so please confirm them locally before you print or share the page.
The template
Replace anything in [brackets] with your own details.
If anyone is hurt or in danger, please call 999 (or 112) first, then let us know.

If something happens
- Fire: get everyone out, close doors behind you and call 999 from outside. Please don't go back in for belongings.
- Gas smell: don't switch lights or appliances on or off and don't light a flame. Open doors and windows if it's safe, turn off the gas at the meter at [Gas meter location] if you can, leave, then call 0800 111 999 from outside.
- Carbon monoxide alarm: get everyone into fresh air straight away and call 999. Don't go back in until you're told it's safe.
- Water leak: turn off the water at [Water shut-off location]. If water is near sockets or appliances, stay clear of them and call us.
- Power out: check whether neighbours are dark too, then check the breaker panel at [Breaker panel location]. Torch: [Torch location]. Please avoid candles. You can call 105 to report it.
- Lost keys or locked out: call [Host phone], or [Backup contact name and phone]. Please don't climb in through a window.
At the coast
- If someone is in trouble in the water or on the cliffs, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
- On lifeguarded beaches, swim between the red and yellow flags. A red flag means don't go in, and black and white chequered flags mark the area for surfboards.
Copied. Paste it into your welcome book or message.
Tips
- Put the postcode on the page; it's the first thing a 999 call handler asks for.
- For remote cottages, add GPS or a what3words reference and how to find the drive from the road.
- In Northern Ireland, swap in the local gas emergency number, since the Great Britain gas line doesn't cover it.
- Name the nearest A&E department, not just a minor injuries unit, and give both if you have them.

Questions
Is 112 the same as 999 in the UK?
Yes. Both reach the same emergency call centres in the UK, so guests used to 112 can dial it.
What number do I call for a power cut in the UK?
In Great Britain, call 105. It's free and connects you to the local electricity network operator.
Who do I call if I smell gas in a UK rental?
In Great Britain, call the National Gas Emergency number, 0800 111 999, from outside the building. Northern Ireland has its own number.
