Emergency info for guests in France (rental template)

France has separate short numbers for the SAMU medical service (15), police (17) and firefighters (18), plus 112, which works for everything. Guests from abroad are best told to use 112 if in doubt. Firefighters often answer medical calls too, so don't worry about picking the wrong one.

We checked these numbers in November 2026, but services change, so please confirm them locally before you print or share the page.

Summer

  • In the south, forest fire risk is high in summer. Please don't barbecue outside unless we've said it's allowed, and never throw away cigarettes outdoors.
  • At the beach, a red flag means swimming is not allowed.

Questions

Which number should a tourist call in France: 112, 15 or 18?

112 works for any emergency and is the simplest for visitors. 15 goes straight to the SAMU medical service and 18 to the firefighters.

Does 911 work in France?

Don't rely on it. Use 112, which is free and works on any phone in France and across the EU.

What is 116 117 in France?

It reaches an out-of-hours doctor for problems that can't wait but aren't life-threatening, in areas where the service runs.
