First aid kit instructions for guests (template)

A first aid kit is only useful if guests can find it and know what's nearby when a bandage isn't enough. Visitors don't know the local emergency number, the closest hospital or whether there's a pharmacy open on Sunday.

This template puts the kit's location, emergency contacts and nearby care first, then gives short basic steps for cuts, burns, splinters and ticks. It's not medical advice, just enough to help a guest act sensibly until help arrives.

The template

Replace anything in [brackets] with your own details.

Emergencies first

  • For any serious injury or illness, call [Emergency number] first.
  • Our address for emergency services: [Address for emergency calls]
  • Nearest emergency department: [Hospital name and address], about [Drive time] away.
  • Walk-in clinic: [Clinic name, hours]. Pharmacy: [Pharmacy name, hours].
  • Poison information: [Poison centre number].

Where things are

  • First aid kit: [Kit location]. A list of what's inside is in the lid.
  • [Second kit, e.g. a smaller kit in the boat shed].
  • [AED location, if you have one].

Small cuts and scrapes

  • Wash your hands or put on the gloves from the kit.
  • Rinse the cut with clean water, press gently with gauze until it stops bleeding, then cover it with a bandage.
  • Get medical help for deep cuts, bleeding that won't stop, or anything from a rusty or dirty object.

Burns

  • Cool the burn under cool running water for at least 10 minutes, longer if it still hurts. No ice, butter or creams.
  • Cover loosely with a clean non-stick dressing. Large, deep or facial burns need medical care.

Splinters and ticks

  • Tweezers are in the kit.
  • For a tick, grip it close to the skin and pull straight up, slowly and steadily. Clean the area and note the date.

Questions

What should be in an Airbnb first aid kit?

Bandages in several sizes, gauze, tape, antiseptic wipes, gloves, tweezers, scissors and a cold pack are a good base. Add items for your location, and check them between stays.

Should I put medicine in my rental first aid kit?

Some hosts include basic over-the-counter pain relief and antihistamines, kept in original packaging with expiry dates. Never leave prescription medicine.

How do I remove a tick?

Grip it with fine tweezers as close to the skin as possible and pull straight up with steady pressure. Clean the area afterwards and see a doctor if a rash or fever develops.
