Fire extinguisher instructions for guests (template)
Most guests have never used an extinguisher. In a panic, the most important thing they need to know is when not to use one: a fire that's bigger than a wastebasket or a room filling with smoke means get out and call for help.
This template gives the location and type, a quick go or no-go check, the PASS steps, what to do with a pan fire, and what to do after. Fill in your locations and keep the instructions short enough to read in ten seconds.

Where they are
- [Extinguisher locations, e.g. under the kitchen sink and by the back door]
- Type: [Type, e.g. multi-purpose ABC]. A fire blanket is at [Fire blanket location].
First, get out if the fire is big
Only try to put a fire out if all of these are true:
- It's small, about the size of a wastebasket, and not spreading.
- The room isn't filling with smoke.
- Everyone else is getting out and someone is calling [Emergency number].
- You have a clear way out behind you.
If not, get everyone out, close the door behind you and call [Emergency number] from outside.
How to use it: PASS
- Pull the pin.
- Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire, not the flames.
- Squeeze the handle.
- Sweep side to side across the base of the fire.
Stand back at the distance shown on the label. Back away without turning your back on the fire, and get out if it flares up again.
Kitchen grease fire
- Turn off the heat and slide a lid or baking sheet over the pan. Or use the fire blanket.
- Never use water, and don't carry the pan outside.
Afterwards
- Call [Emergency number] even if you think it's out. Fires can restart inside walls.
- Please let us know right away at [Host phone] so we can replace the extinguisher.
Meeting spot outside: [Meeting spot]
Address for emergency services: [Address for emergency calls]

Tips
- Mount an extinguisher in the kitchen, near any wood stove or fireplace, and on each level, out of children's reach but easy for adults to see.
- Check the gauge and the inspection tag between stays, and replace any that has been used or discharged.
- Don't hide the extinguisher in a cupboard full of cleaning supplies; put it near an exit.
- Add a fire blanket by the stove; it's easier for most people than an extinguisher on a pan fire.
- Never tell guests they'll be charged for using it in an emergency; you want them to act.

Questions
What does PASS mean on a fire extinguisher?
Pull the pin, Aim at the base of the fire, Squeeze the handle and Sweep side to side. It's the standard way to use a portable extinguisher.
When should a guest not use a fire extinguisher?
When the fire is bigger than a small wastebasket, is spreading, or smoke is filling the room. Then they should get out, close the door and call for help.
What kind of fire extinguisher should a rental have?
A multi-purpose ABC extinguisher covers the common household fires. Check your local fire service or rental rules for what's required where you are.
