Fire pit instructions for guests (template)
An evening around the fire pit is a highlight of many cabin and cottage stays, and it's also where things can go wrong fastest. Wind, a fire ban guests didn't know about or a fire left smouldering overnight can cause real damage.
This template asks guests to check for a fire ban first, keep the fire small and attended, and put it out properly with water. Fill in your local fire information line and where the water bucket and hose are.

Replace anything in [brackets] with your own details.
Before you light a fire
- Please check for a fire ban or restrictions first: [Website, phone line or sign location].
- Please don't light a fire on windy days or when sparks could blow toward trees or buildings.
- Fill the water bucket at [Tap location] and keep it beside the pit. The hose is at [Hose location].
Lighting the fire
- Use only the fire pit at [Fire pit location].
- Start with paper or a fire starter, then kindling, then a few small logs from [Firewood location].
- Please never use gasoline, lighter fluid or other liquids to start or boost the fire.
- Keep the fire small, about [knee height / the size of the pit], and keep chairs back from the ring.
While it's burning
- Please keep an adult at the fire the whole time it's lit.
- Keep children and pets back from the ring, and roast marshmallows with long sticks: [Location of sticks].
- Please don't burn trash, cardboard, plastic, pallets or treated wood.
Putting it out
- Let the fire burn down, then pour water slowly over all of it.
- Stir the ashes with [Shovel or stick], add more water, and repeat.
- Hold your hand near the ashes. If you can feel any heat, it isn't out yet.
- Please put the fire out completely before you go to bed or leave the area.
If something goes wrong
- A fire spreads outside the pit: get everyone away and call [Local emergency number]. Give this address: [Address].
- Burns: cool with cool running water for at least 20 minutes. First aid kit: [Location].
- Questions: text [Host name] at [Host phone].

Tips
- Put the local fire-ban check right at the top; restrictions can change daily in dry weather.
- Leave a metal bucket and a shovel at the pit so guests can drown and stir the fire.
- Clear a wide circle around the pit of dry grass, leaves and overhanging branches.
- Place chairs at a safe distance so guests aren't tempted to pull them in close.
- Say how to know a fire is out: cold to the touch, not just no flames.

Questions
How do you put out a fire pit properly?
Drown it with water, stir the ashes, drown it again and check for heat with the back of your hand. If anything is still warm, keep going.
Can I tell guests not to use the fire pit?
Yes. Many hosts disable it during dry spells or fire bans and say so in a message and the house manual.
Should guests use lighter fluid in a fire pit?
No. Liquids like gasoline or lighter fluid can cause flare-ups and burns. Paper, kindling and dry wood are all they need.
