Charcoal grill instructions for guests (template)
Charcoal grills look simple but cause more burns and fires than people expect, mostly from lighter fluid added to hot coals and ashes dumped while still live. Guests also often don't know how long coals take to get ready.
This template explains lighting with a chimney starter, using the vents to control heat, closing the grill down and where cold ashes go. Fill in what you provide: charcoal, chimney, lighter cubes.

Replace anything in [brackets] with your own details.
Where to use it
- The grill stays at [Location], outside and away from the house, deck railings and trees.
- Please never use a charcoal grill indoors, in a garage, tent or any covered space. It gives off carbon monoxide.
Lighting the charcoal
- Charcoal, a chimney starter and fire starters are at [Location].
- Open the bottom vents: [Vent location].
- Fill the chimney with charcoal, put a fire starter or two sheets of scrunched paper under it, and light.
- In about [15–20] minutes the top coals turn grey. Wearing the grill gloves, pour them into the grill.
- If you use lighter fluid, use it only on cold charcoal before lighting. Please never add any to lit or warm coals.
Cooking
- Open the vents for more heat, close them partly for less.
- Wait until the flames die down and the coals are covered in grey ash before you start cooking.
- Please keep children and pets well away from the grill.
Putting it out
- Put the lid on and close all the vents. The coals will go out within an hour or two.
- The grill and ashes stay hot for many hours. Please don't move or tip the grill.
- Please leave the ashes in the grill. If you need to empty it, ashes go only in the metal can at [Location], once they're completely cold.
If something goes wrong
- Flare-up: close the lid and the vents. Please don't use water on a grease fire.
- A fire outside the grill: call [Local emergency number] and give this address: [Address].
- Burns: cool with cool running water for at least 20 minutes. First aid kit: [Location].
- Questions: text [Host name] at [Host phone].

Tips
- Leave a chimney starter; it's safer and easier than lighter fluid for most guests.
- Keep a metal can with a lid for ashes, well away from anything that can burn.
- Tell guests to leave ashes in the grill so nobody dumps hot coals in the trash.
- Store charcoal somewhere dry; damp charcoal is hard to light and smokes a lot.
- Include long-handled tools and heat-resistant gloves.

Questions
How long do charcoal ashes stay hot?
Coals can stay hot enough to start a fire for many hours, sometimes more than a day. Leaving them in a closed grill or a lidded metal can is the safe choice.
Is it safe to use a charcoal grill on a balcony?
Many buildings and local rules don't allow it, and it should never be used in a covered or enclosed space. Check your building and local rules before offering one.
How do you put out a charcoal grill?
Close the lid and all the vents so the coals run out of air. Leave it until it's cold.
