Firewood instructions for guests (template)

Firewood questions come up in nearly every cabin stay: is it free, how much can we use, where's the kindling, can we buy more nearby? A short firewood note saves messages and stops guests burning the wrong thing.

This template tells guests where the wood and kindling are, what each pile is for, what not to burn and where to buy more. It also explains why guests shouldn't bring wood from far away, which helps stop tree pests spreading.

The template

Replace anything in [brackets] with your own details.

Where the firewood is

  • Dry firewood for the stove or fireplace: [Location, e.g. the rack on the back porch].
  • Kindling and fire starters: [Location].
  • Matches or a long lighter: [Location].
  • Wood for the outdoor fire pit: [Location, if different].

How much to use

  • [Amount included, e.g. one bundle per night is included in your stay / the whole rack is yours to use].
  • More wood: [Where to get it, e.g. ask us / the extra stack in the shed / buy bundles at Store name, Distance].

Which wood to use

  • Please use only the dry split wood from [Location]. The stack at [Location] is still drying and won't burn well.
  • Please don't burn painted, stained or treated wood, pallets, driftwood, cardboard or trash. They give off harmful smoke and can damage the stove.

Bringing your own

  • Please don't bring firewood from home. Moving firewood between areas can carry insects and diseases that kill trees.
  • If you'd like more, please buy it locally, close to here.

Carrying wood in

  • A log carrier or basket is at [Location].
  • Please keep wood you bring inside at least [1 metre / 3 feet] from the stove or fireplace.
  • Gloves are at [Location], in case of splinters.

Questions

  • Running low or the wood is damp: text [Host name] at [Host phone] and we'll sort it out.

Questions

Should I include firewood in my Airbnb?

Many cabin hosts include a set amount and say where to buy more. Whatever you choose, say it clearly in the listing and the house manual.

Why shouldn't guests bring their own firewood?

Firewood moved from other areas can carry insects and tree diseases. Many places advise buying firewood close to where you'll burn it.

How can I tell if firewood is dry enough?

Dry wood is lighter, has cracks in the ends and sounds hollow when two pieces are knocked together. A cheap moisture meter gives a quick check.
