Gas stove instructions for guests (template)
Plenty of guests have only cooked on electric. A gas stovetop that clicks without lighting, or a burner left on low with no flame, makes people nervous for good reason.
This template covers lighting a burner, what to do if it won't catch, using the fan, and the steps to take if anyone smells gas. It also covers pan fires and where the CO alarm is. Fill in your knobs, the manual lighting method and your gas company's emergency number.

Replace anything in [brackets] with your own details.
Lighting a burner
- Push the knob in and turn it to [Ignite position, e.g. the spark symbol or High].
- You'll hear clicking. Keep holding until the flame lights, then turn it to the level you want.
- If it hasn't lit after a few seconds, turn the knob off, wait a minute for the gas to clear, then try again.
- If the clicker doesn't work: [Manual lighting method, e.g. the long lighter in the top drawer].
While you cook
- Please turn on the range hood fan at [Fan switch] whenever a burner is on.
- A good flame is blue and steady. Keep pan handles turned in, away from the front edge.
- Keep tea towels, paper, oven mitts and loose sleeves away from the flames.
If you smell gas
- Gas smells like rotten eggs. Don't flip light switches, light anything or use your phone inside.
- Turn the knobs off if it's safe, open a door, and get everyone outside.
- From outside, call [Gas company emergency number] or [Emergency number], then let us know.
Pan fires
- Turn off the burner and slide a lid or baking sheet over the pan. Never use water, and don't carry the pan.
- If the fire spreads, get out and call [Emergency number]. The fire extinguisher is at [Extinguisher location].
Safety
- Please never use the stove or oven to heat the room.
- The CO alarm is at [CO alarm location]. If it sounds, everyone goes outside.
If something goes wrong
- The flame is yellow, sooty or won't stay lit: turn it off and tell us.
- It keeps clicking after it's lit: turn it off; a spill may be wetting the igniter.
- [Host name], [Host phone].

Tips
- Make sure there's a working CO alarm near the kitchen and sleeping areas before your first guest.
- Write your gas company's emergency number into the template; guests won't know it.
- Show the manual lighting method only if your stove's maker allows it.
- Keep a lid that fits your largest frying pan beside the stove.
- Have the stove serviced if guests report yellow flames or a smell.

Questions
What should guests do if they smell gas in a rental?
Don't use switches or flames, get everyone outside, and call the gas company's emergency line or the emergency number from outside. Then call the host.
Why does my gas burner keep clicking?
The igniter is often wet from a spill or the burner cap is out of place. Let it dry and reseat the cap; if it continues, have it checked.
Is it safe for guests to use a gas stove?
Yes, with clear instructions, a range hood, a working CO alarm and a fire extinguisher nearby. Explain what to do if they smell gas.
