Oven instructions for guests (template)
Every oven has its own symbols, and guests rarely know whether the fan icon means bake or defrost. Some ovens won't start at all until the clock is set, which looks like a broken appliance to a hungry family.
This template explains the function dial, temperature units, preheating, the timer, the self-clean setting to avoid, and what to do if there's smoke or a fire inside. Fill in your symbols and add a photo of the control panel.
The template
Replace anything in [brackets] with your own details.
Turning it on
- Choose a setting with [Function dial or buttons]:
- [Symbol] = regular bake
- [Symbol] = fan or convection bake
- [Symbol] = broil or grill (heat from the top)
- Set the temperature with [Temperature control]. This oven shows [Celsius or Fahrenheit].
- It's preheated when [Preheat signal, e.g. the light goes out or it beeps], usually about [Minutes] minutes.
Before you preheat
Please open the door and check the oven is empty. Baking trays and racks are in [Tray location]. Oven mitts are in [Mitt location].
Timer and clock
- Timer: [How to set the timer].
- If the oven won't start, the clock may need setting: [Clock steps].
- [Lock note, e.g. If you see a key symbol, hold Stop for three seconds to unlock.]
Safety
- The door glass and the racks get very hot. Please keep small children back.
- When broiling, stay close by and keep the door [Open or closed, as the manual says].
- Please don't put foil on the oven floor or use the self-clean setting.
- If something catches fire inside, keep the door closed, switch the oven off, and call [Emergency number] if it doesn't go out quickly. Get everyone out if it spreads.
If something goes wrong
- Smoke from a spill: switch off, turn on the range hood at [Fan switch] and open a window. If the smoke alarm goes off, fan it with a towel; please don't take the battery out.
- It isn't heating: check the breaker labelled [Breaker label] at [Panel location].
- Anything else: [Host name], [Host phone].
Copied. Paste it into your welcome book or message.
Tips
- Store pans in a drawer, not inside the oven, so nothing melts during preheating.
- Say whether the dial is in Celsius or Fahrenheit; guests from other countries will guess wrong.
- Leave one good baking sheet and a roasting pan at minimum, plus two oven mitts.
- Clean the oven between stays so the first preheat doesn't set off the smoke alarm.
- Set the clock after every power cut, since many ovens refuse to start until you do.

Questions
Why won't my oven turn on?
Many ovens won't heat until the clock is set after a power cut, and some have a child lock. Check the clock first, then the breaker.
What do the symbols on an oven mean?
They show which elements heat and whether the fan runs. Your manual has the full list; put the three most common ones into your guest instructions.
Should I let guests use the self-cleaning oven setting?
It's better not to. It runs very hot for a long time and can smoke, so hosts usually clean the oven between stays instead.
