Emergency info for guests in the US (rental template)
Guests from the US know 911, but international visitors often don't, and few people know the national Poison Help line or 988. Non-emergency police numbers and utility lines are local, so they're left as blanks for you.
We checked these numbers in November 2026, but services change, so please confirm them locally before you print or share the page.
The template
Replace anything in [brackets] with your own details.
If anyone is hurt or in danger, please call 911 first, then let us know.

If something happens
- Fire: get everyone out, close doors behind you and call 911 from outside. Please don't go back in for belongings.
- Gas smell: don't switch lights or appliances on or off and don't light a flame. Open doors and windows if it's safe, leave, then call [Gas utility emergency line] or 911 from outside.
- Carbon monoxide alarm: get everyone into fresh air straight away and call 911. Don't go back in until you're told it's safe.
- Water leak: turn off the water at [Water shut-off location]. If water is near outlets or appliances, stay clear of them and call us.
- Power out: check whether neighbours are dark too, then check the breaker panel at [Breaker panel location]. Flashlight: [Flashlight location]. Please avoid candles. Report outages to [Power company outage line].
- Lost keys or locked out: call [Host phone], or [Backup contact name and phone]. Please don't climb in through a window.
Severe weather here
- Emergency alerts come straight to most phones. If you're told to evacuate, please go.
- [Local risk, e.g. tornado: go to the basement or an inside room on the lowest floor, away from windows]
- [Local risk, e.g. hurricane season: where to go and how we'll contact you]
Copied. Paste it into your welcome book or message.
Tips
- Give dispatchers the full street address with the unit or cabin number, and the nearest cross street.
- Add the tornado, hurricane, wildfire or flood note that fits your area; one generic line helps nobody.
- Text-to-911 works in many areas but not all, so tell guests to call when they can.
- Name the closest hospital with a 24-hour emergency room, and an urgent care clinic for smaller problems.
Put it on one guest page instead of a binder

Questions
What number do I call for poisoning in the US?
