Washer and dryer instructions for guests (template)
Guests on longer stays and families with small children love a washer and dryer, as long as they can work out the dials. Every brand labels cycles differently, and some front-loaders lock the door for minutes after a cycle ends.
This template explains the cycle guests usually want, where detergent is, the dryer lint screen (a real fire-safety step) and what to avoid. It's offered for their use, never as a checkout chore.
The template
Replace anything in [brackets] with your own details.
You're welcome to use them
- The washer and dryer are at [Location]. They're there for your use during your stay, if you'd like them.
The washer
- Detergent: [Detergent location and type, e.g. pods in the cupboard above, one pod per load].
- Put the detergent [in the drum / in the drawer marked II] before the clothes.
- For most loads, choose [Normal / Cotton] and press [Start button].
- A load takes about [Time]. The door stays locked for a couple of minutes after the cycle ends. That's normal.
- [Septic note: if you're doing a few loads, please space them out through the day].
The dryer
- Please check the lint screen at [Lint screen location] and clear it before each load. A clogged screen is a fire risk and slows drying.
- For most loads, choose [Normal / Timed dry 60 minutes] and press [Start button].
- Drying rack for delicate items: [Location].
Please avoid
- Washing or drying anything with oil, gasoline or cooking grease on it, even after washing.
- Drying shoes, rubber-backed mats or items with a "do not tumble dry" label.
- Running the dryer while you're out or asleep.
Good to know
- Spare hangers and an iron are at [Location].
- [Shared laundry in a condo: hours and how to pay, e.g. Laundry room open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.].
If something goes wrong
- The washer shows a code or won't drain: please stop it, leave the door closed and text [Host name] at [Host phone].
- A burning smell from the dryer: switch it off and let us know right away.
- Water on the floor: turn the washer off and text us.
Copied. Paste it into your welcome book or message.
Tips
- Leave single-dose detergent; guests don't know how much to use in a high-efficiency washer.
- Clean the dryer vent and duct on a schedule; a clear lint screen alone isn't enough.
- Never put laundry on the checkout list; Airbnb doesn't allow asking guests to start laundry.
- Photograph the control panel and circle the one cycle most guests need.
- Mention shared-laundry hours and payment if you're in a condo or apartment building.

Questions
Can I ask Airbnb guests to start the laundry at checkout?
No. Airbnb's checkout rules don't allow asking guests to start laundry or strip beds. Gathering used towels is an allowed ask.
Why should guests clean the dryer lint screen?
Lint is very flammable, and a full screen restricts airflow and can overheat the dryer. Clearing it before each load is a simple safety step.
Should I provide laundry detergent for guests?
Many hosts do, especially for longer stays. Pre-measured pods avoid over-sudsing and confusion.
