Solar power instructions for guests (template)
Guests love the idea of an off-grid or solar-powered stay, but few have lived with a battery bank. Running the kettle, the hair dryer and a space heater at once on a cloudy afternoon can drain it, or shut the inverter down.
This template explains your setup in plain words, how to check the battery, which appliances to use with care, what the backup is, and why the panels and equipment are off limits. It works for grid-tied homes too: just keep the safety section.

Replace anything in [brackets] with your own details.
How our power works
- Solar panels on [Panel location] charge a battery bank in [Battery location].
- This home is [System type, e.g. off-grid / connected to the grid with battery backup].
- You can check the battery level on [Display or app location]. Above [Healthy level] is fine.
Using power wisely
- Sunny middle of the day is the best time for [High-draw jobs, e.g. the kettle, toaster and laundry].
- On cloudy days or when the battery is below [Low level], please run one high-power appliance at a time.
- Please don't use [Not allowed items, e.g. hair dryers, space heaters or electric blankets] here.
- Turn off lights and unplug chargers you're not using. Heat comes from [Heat source], not electricity.
Backup
[Backup plan, e.g. If the battery gets very low, the backup generator starts by itself. Please text us if it runs for more than an hour.]
Safety
- Please don't touch the panels, the inverter, the batteries or any wiring, and keep children out of [Equipment room].
- If snow covers the panels, please don't climb on the roof or try to clear them. Let us know.
- If you smell burning, see smoke or hear an alarm from the battery area, get everyone out, call [Emergency number], then call us.
If something goes wrong
- The power cuts out: check the display at [Display location]. [Reset steps, if any, or Please don't reset anything; text us.]
- Contact [Host name] at [Host phone].

Tips
- Tell guests in the listing if the home is off-grid and which appliances they can't use.
- Put the battery display somewhere visible, like the kitchen, so guests check it without thinking.
- Lock the equipment room and keep the area around batteries clear of storage.
- Set the inverter to shed big loads automatically if your system supports it.
- Leave a lantern and phone power bank in case the battery runs flat at night.

Questions
How do I explain off-grid solar to rental guests?
Keep it to where the battery level shows, what a healthy number is, and which appliances to use one at a time. Guests don't need the system specs.
Can guests use a hair dryer in an off-grid cabin?
It depends on your inverter and battery size. Many off-grid hosts ask guests not to bring high-power appliances; say so in the listing and the manual.
Should guests clear snow off solar panels?
No. Ask them not to climb on the roof or touch the panels. Snow usually slides off on its own once the sun comes out.
