Generator instructions for guests (template)
A generator keeps the lights and the well pump on in a storm, but a portable one used in the wrong place can kill. Carbon monoxide has no smell, and running a generator in a garage, porch or basement is one of the most common causes of poisoning during outages.
This template covers both kinds: a standby unit that starts on its own, and a portable one guests should only run if you've asked them to. Delete the part you don't need and fill in your fuel and start steps.
The template
Replace anything in [brackets] with your own details.
Standby generator (starts by itself)
- If the power goes out, our generator at [Generator location] starts on its own after about [Seconds] seconds. You'll hear it.
- It powers [What it powers, e.g. the fridge, well pump, furnace and kitchen lights].
- Please leave it alone. It switches off by itself when the power comes back.
Portable generator (only if we ask you to use it)
- It stays outside at [Generator spot], at least 6 metres (20 feet) from the house, with the exhaust pointing away from doors, windows and vents.
- Never run it inside the house, garage, basement, shed or on a porch, even with doors and windows open.
- To start: [Start steps].
- Plug in only through [Connection method, e.g. the transfer switch at Switch location / the heavy-duty outdoor cords provided]. Never plug it into a wall outlet.
- Switch it off and let it cool before refuelling. Fuel is in [Fuel location], away from the house.
- Don't run it in rain or snow unless it's under [Cover or shelter].
Carbon monoxide
- CO alarms are at [CO alarm locations].
- If an alarm sounds, or anyone has a headache, dizziness, nausea or feels sleepy, get everyone outside to fresh air right away and call [Emergency number].
Saving fuel
Please run only what you need: [Priority list]. Avoid [High-draw items, e.g. the dryer and space heaters].
If something goes wrong
- It won't start or keeps stopping: switch it off and call [Host name] at [Host phone]. Please don't open the panels.

Tips
- Have a standby generator installed and serviced by a licensed professional, with a proper transfer switch.
- If you don't want guests touching a portable generator at all, say so and give them an outage plan instead.
- Fit CO alarms on every level and outside sleeping areas, and test them between stays.
- Store fuel in approved containers in a shed away from the house, not in the basement.
- Mark the safe running spot with a post or paving stone so guests don't move the generator closer.

Questions
Can a generator be used in a garage with the door open?
No. An open garage door doesn't clear carbon monoxide fast enough, and the gas can seep into the home. Run portable generators outdoors, well away from the house.
Should Airbnb guests run a portable generator?
Only if you're comfortable with it and give clear written steps and a marked outdoor spot. Many hosts prefer a standby unit or ask guests to call them.
Why can't a generator plug into a wall outlet?
It can send power back into the grid and endanger line workers, and it can damage the home's wiring. Use a transfer switch or plug appliances in with suitable cords.
