Garage door instructions for guests (template)
A garage door is heavy, it moves on its own, and guests use it without ever having been shown. That's why the safety lines matter as much as the button instructions.
This template covers opening and closing, where to park, the sensors near the floor, why the door reverses, what to do in a power outage, and why the red cord should stay alone. Fill in your remote, keypad and parking details.
The template
Replace anything in [brackets] with your own details.
Opening and closing
- Remote: [Remote location]. Press once to open, once to close, and once to stop it part way.
- Inside button: [Wall button location].
- Outside keypad: [Keypad location]. Code: [Garage code].
- Please watch the door until it's fully closed.
Parking
- Your space is [Which space]. [Parking guide, e.g. pull in until the hanging ball touches the windshield].
- Clearance is [Height]. Please take roof boxes and bikes off the roof first.
- Please close the garage door when you leave and at night.
Safety
- Keep children, pets and people clear while the door moves. Please don't walk under a closing door, and keep the remote away from children.
- The two sensors near the floor at [Sensor location] stop the door if something is in the way. Keep them clear.
- Never run a car, generator, barbecue or heater in the garage, even with the door open. Carbon monoxide builds up fast.
- Please don't pull the red emergency release cord unless we ask you to. The door can drop suddenly.
Power outage
The opener won't work without power. [Outage plan, e.g. use the side door at Side door location, and call us if you need the car out].
If something goes wrong
- The door goes down, then back up: something is blocking the sensors, or one is knocked out of line. Clear the path, check both sensor lights are on, and try again.
- It grinds, shakes or a spring looks broken: stop using it and call [Host name] at [Host phone].
- The remote doesn't work: try the wall button. Spare batteries are in [Battery location].
Copied. Paste it into your welcome book or message.
Tips
- Test the auto-reverse with a roll of paper towel before peak season; replace or adjust if it doesn't reverse.
- Mark the guest parking spot with tape or a sign if there's room for more than one car.
- Take valuables and tools out of the garage or lock them away if guests have access.
- Change the keypad code between stays, the same as the front door.
- Store any fuel, paint and propane well away from where guests park.

Questions
Why does my garage door go back up when closing?
The safety sensors near the floor think something is in the way. Check nothing is blocking them and that both lights are on and lined up.
Should guests use the garage door release cord?
Usually not. Pulling it can drop the door if a spring is weak, so most hosts ask guests to call them instead.
Can guests warm up a car in the garage?
No. Running an engine in a garage, even with the door open, can fill the home with carbon monoxide. Ask guests to start the car outside.
