Crib and baby gear instructions for guests (template)
Families book stays with a crib, a high chair and a gate so they can travel lighter. Parents will check your gear carefully, and the instructions should match what safe sleep experts advise.
This template lists what's provided, gives the safe sleep basics in plain words (back to sleep, firm flat mattress, nothing else in the crib), explains the travel cot, high chair, gates and bath, and flags hazards in your home. Fill in your gear and take out anything you don't have.
The template
Replace anything in [brackets] with your own details.
What we have
- [Gear list, e.g. a full-size crib in Room, a travel cot, a high chair, two stair gates, a baby bath]
- Fitted crib sheets: [Sheet location]
- Sleep sacks: [Sleep sack note, or Please bring your own]
Safe sleep
- Please put baby to sleep on their back, for every sleep.
- Use only the firm, flat mattress that came with the crib or travel cot, with a fitted sheet.
- Keep the crib empty: no pillows, blankets, bumpers, toys or sleep positioners. A sleep sack keeps baby warm instead.
- Please don't add an extra mattress or padding to the travel cot.
- Keep the crib away from windows, blind cords, heaters and lamps.
- Never leave a baby to sleep on a sofa, armchair or adult bed.
Setting up the travel cot
- [Setup steps, e.g. lift each side rail until it clicks, then push the centre of the floor down].
- Check every rail is locked before putting baby in, then lay the mattress flat on the floor.
Other gear
- High chair: always use the straps, and keep it away from the counter and table edge so baby can't push off.
- Stair gates: [Gate note, e.g. the gate at the top of the stairs is screwed in; the pressure gate is for doorways only].
- Bath: please never leave a child alone in the bath, even for a moment.
Things to watch for in our home
[Hazards, e.g. the wood stove, the steep stairs to the loft, the pond in the garden, the hot tub.]

Tips
- Check crib and travel cot model numbers against recall lists before you offer them, and again each year.
- Never offer a used car seat; you can't know its crash history.
- Inspect rails, locks and mattresses between stays and remove anything worn or loose.
- Use a hardware-mounted gate at the top of stairs, since pressure gates can push out.
- Leave the crib bare. Hosts often add a cute blanket or toy for photos; take it out before guests arrive.

Questions
What's the safest way to set up a crib in a rental?
Use a crib or travel cot that meets current safety standards, with only its own firm, flat mattress and a fitted sheet. Keep it bare and away from windows, cords and heaters.
Can I put a blanket in the crib for guests?
No. Safe sleep advice is to keep the crib empty of blankets, pillows, bumpers and toys. Offer a sleep sack instead.
Should I provide a car seat for guests?
Most hosts don't, because there's no way to know whether a used seat has been in a crash. Point guests to a local rental service or ask them to bring their own.
