Coffee maker instructions for guests (template)

The first thing many guests do after arriving, or waking up, is look for coffee. A drip coffee maker is simple, but guests still need to know where the filters and coffee are, how much to use and whether the machine switches itself off.

This template covers a basic pot, the measure that tastes right in your machine and a couple of safety lines for hot plates and glass carafes. Fill in your model's buttons and what supplies you leave.

The template

Replace anything in [brackets] with your own details.

Where everything is

  • Coffee maker: [Location].
  • Coffee: [Location and type, e.g. ground medium roast in the jar on the counter].
  • Filters: [Location and size, e.g. #4 cone filters in the drawer below].
  • Mugs, sugar and spoons: [Location]. Milk or cream: [We leave a small carton in the fridge / bring your own].

Making a pot

  • Fill the carafe with cold water to the line for the number of cups you want, then pour it into the water tank at [Water tank location].
  • Put a filter in the basket and add coffee: about [1 heaped tablespoon per cup, or the scoop in the jar].
  • Put the carafe back on the plate and press [Start or brew button].
  • It takes about [Time] for a full pot.

Good to know

  • The machine has [a pause-and-pour feature, so you can pour a cup mid-brew / no pause feature, so please wait until it finishes].
  • The hot plate keeps coffee warm and switches off by itself after [Number] hours. [Or: please switch it off when you're done].
  • [Timer: how to set it to brew in the morning, if your model has one].
  • [Grinder: if you'd like fresh beans, the grinder is at Location].

Safety

  • The hot plate and carafe get very hot. Please keep them away from the counter edge and children.
  • Please don't put the glass carafe on the stove or in the microwave.
  • If the carafe cracks, please stop using it and let us know.

If something goes wrong

  • No coffee coming through: check the carafe is pushed in fully and there's water in the tank.
  • Overflowing basket: usually too much coffee or the wrong size filter. Try a little less.
  • Anything else: text [Host name] at [Host phone].
  • Tea, a kettle and other drinks: [Location].

Questions

What should I leave for guests with a coffee maker?

Ground coffee, filters that fit, a scoop, mugs and sugar are the basics. Milk or cream, decaf and tea are welcome extras.

How much coffee per cup in a drip coffee maker?

A common starting point is about one heaped tablespoon of ground coffee per cup of water. Leave a scoop and a note with the amount that works in your machine.

Do I need a coffee maker with auto shut-off?

It's a good idea for rentals, since guests may forget to turn the hot plate off. Many drip machines switch off on their own after a set time.
