Espresso machine instructions for guests (template)

A manual espresso machine is one of the most loved extras in a rental and one of the easiest to misuse. Guests who have never tamped a basket end up with watery shots, a stuck handle or a scalded hand from the steam wand.

This template takes a guest from a cold machine to a decent flat white: filling the tank, dosing and locking in the handle, steaming milk safely and what the warning lights mean. Fill in your model's buttons and add one photo of the front panel.

Making an espresso

  • Fill the water tank at [Tank location, e.g. the back of the machine] with cold tap water, up to the top line.
  • Switch on at [Power switch]. Wait until [Ready signal, e.g. the light stops flashing], which takes about [Warm-up time].
  • Use the [Single or double] basket. Add [Amount, e.g. two scoops] of ground coffee, level it, then press it down firmly and evenly with the tamper.
  • Lock the handle into the machine by turning it to the right until it's snug.
  • Put a cup under the spouts and press [Brew button]. Press again to stop at about [Shot size, e.g. 60 ml for a double].

Steaming milk

  • Fill the small jug about a third full with cold milk.
  • Point the steam wand into a cloth and open [Steam knob] for a second to clear the water.
  • Dip the tip just under the milk and open the steam. When the jug is too hot to hold comfortably, close the steam before you lift the jug away.
  • Wipe the wand straight away with the damp cloth.

When you're finished

  • Knock the used coffee into [Knock box or bin]. Rinse the handle and leave it on the drip tray.
  • Switch the machine off. Coffee, filters and the grinder are in [Coffee location].

Safety

  • The steam wand, the metal head and the water in the drip tray get very hot. Please keep children away while it's on.
  • Never twist the handle out while the machine is brewing or still under pressure.

If something goes wrong

  • Nothing comes out: check the tank is full and pushed all the way down.
  • Coffee drips very slowly: the coffee may be too fine or pressed too hard. Try a little less.
  • [Warning light colour] light on: [What it means, e.g. time to descale]. Please let us know rather than descaling it yourself.
  • Anything else: text [Host name] at [Host phone].

Questions

Should I put an espresso machine in my Airbnb?

It can be a nice extra if you leave clear instructions and a backup way to make coffee. Choose a machine with simple controls, since guests use it for only a few days.

Why is my guest's espresso watery?

Usually the coffee wasn't pressed firmly enough, the grind is too coarse, or the wrong basket was used. A line in your instructions about dose and tamping fixes most of it.

Can guests burn themselves on an espresso machine?

Yes, the steam wand and brew head get very hot. Remind guests to keep children away and to close the steam before lifting the milk jug.
