Water softener instructions for guests (template)
Guests who've never had a water softener notice it straight away: soap lathers more and the water feels slippery on skin. Some think something is wrong, and some wonder whether they should be drinking it.
This template explains what's normal, which taps are softened, and that guests don't need to touch the unit or add salt. Fill in your regeneration time and whether the kitchen tap bypasses the softener.

About the water
- This home has a water softener at [Location]. It removes minerals that cause hard water and scale.
What's normal
- Softened water feels a bit slippery, and soap and shampoo lather more. You'll need less of both.
- The softener cleans itself at [Regeneration time, e.g. 2 a.m.] every few days. You may hear water running or a soft hum. That's normal.
- During that time, hot water may be briefly unavailable or the water may taste slightly salty if you use it.
Drinking water
- [Choose one: The kitchen tap is not softened and is best for drinking and cooking. / All taps are softened; the filtered tap at [Location] is best for drinking. / Bottled water is at [Location]].
- If anyone is on a low-salt diet, please use [Unsoftened tap or bottled water] for drinking.
You don't need to do anything
- We look after the salt and settings between stays. Please leave the controls and the salt tank as they are.
- Please keep the area around the unit clear.
If something goes wrong
- The water suddenly feels hard again, there's a salty taste outside of the night-time cycle, or the unit beeps or shows a code: please text [Host name] at [Host phone].
- Water leaking around the unit: if you can, turn the bypass valve [Bypass valve location] to bypass, and let us know right away.
Copied. Paste it into your welcome book or message.
Tips
- Fill the salt tank before each stay so guests never have to think about it.
- Say clearly which tap is unsoftened for drinking, if you have one.
- Set the regeneration for the middle of the night when nobody is showering.
- Show the bypass valve with a photo for leaks.
- Mention the slippery feel up front; it's the most common question.

Questions
Is softened water safe to drink?
Softened water contains added sodium. Many homes keep an unsoftened kitchen tap for drinking, and people on low-salt diets may prefer it or bottled water.
Why does water feel slippery after a water softener?
Without the minerals that react with soap, soap rinses off differently and leaves skin feeling smooth. It's normal and means the softener is working.
Should guests add salt to the water softener?
No. Topping up salt is the host's job between stays, not something to ask of guests.
