Sauna instructions for guests (template)
A sauna is simple once you know it, but guests won't know how long yours takes to heat, whether they can pour water on the stones or how to switch it off. Electric and wood-fired saunas also work quite differently.
This template gives guests the steps, sensible time limits, who should check with a doctor first and a clear switch-off step. Fill in whether your heater takes water on the rocks and how long it takes to warm up.
The template
Replace anything in [brackets] with your own details.
Heating up
- The sauna is [Electric / Wood-fired]. It takes about [Warm-up time] minutes to heat.
- To turn it on: [Steps, e.g. turn the dial on the wall to 80 and the timer to 1 hour].
- For a wood-fired sauna: light the fire as described in [Where the wood stove steps are], keep the stove door closed and keep the chimney damper open.
Using the sauna
- Please shower first and sit on a towel.
- Start with [10–15] minutes, then step out, cool off and drink water before going back in.
- Water on the stones: [Yes, use the ladle, a little at a time / Please don't, this heater isn't made for it].
- Please don't hang towels or clothes on or near the heater.
Safety
- Please don't use the sauna after drinking alcohol, and never alone.
- Get out straight away if you feel dizzy, sick or faint.
- Children must be with an adult the whole time and stay in for only a few minutes.
- If you're pregnant or have a heart condition or blood pressure concerns, please check with your doctor first.
- The heater, stones and stove pipe stay very hot. Please don't touch them.
- The sauna door opens [Outward / Inward] and never locks.
Switching off
- When you're done: [Steps, e.g. turn the dial to 0]. The timer also switches it off after [Number] hours.
- For the wood-fired sauna, let the fire burn out on its own. The carbon monoxide alarm is [CO alarm location].
If something goes wrong
- Not heating: check the switch at [Breaker or switch location], then text [Host name] at [Host phone].
- Smoke inside, a burning smell or an alarm: leave, close the door and call [Local emergency number].
Copied. Paste it into your welcome book or message.
Tips
- Say clearly whether water on the rocks is allowed; on some electric heaters it causes damage.
- Give the real warm-up time so guests don't sit in a cold sauna wondering if it's broken.
- Use a heater with an automatic timer so a forgotten sauna switches itself off.
- Fit a carbon monoxide alarm near a wood-fired sauna and its changing room.
- Keep a thermometer inside so guests can see the temperature, not guess it.

Questions
How long should guests stay in a sauna?
Around 10 to 15 minutes at a time is a common, conservative guide, with cool-down breaks and water in between. Anyone who feels unwell should get out straight away.
Can you pour water on electric sauna stones?
Only if the heater is made for it. Check the manual and tell guests clearly either way.
Is a sauna safe for children?
Older children can use it with an adult for short sessions at a lower temperature. Many hosts suggest a minimum age, and babies and toddlers should stay out.
