Composting toilet instructions for guests (template)
Composting toilets are common in off-grid cabins, tiny homes and glamping sites. They work well, but only if guests know the few steps: sit down every time, add cover material after solids and keep other things out.
This template explains how yours works in friendly, matter-of-fact words, so guests aren't embarrassed to ask. Fill in whether yours separates urine, what cover material you use and whether toilet paper goes in.

How it works
- This cabin has a composting toilet. There's no water or flushing; waste breaks down naturally in the unit. With a few easy steps, it doesn't smell.
Using the toilet
- Please sit down every time, including when peeing. [Urine-separating models: this lets the front bowl catch urine and the back take solids].
- After solids: [Steps, e.g. add one scoop of the wood shavings from the bucket beside the toilet / turn the handle on the side two full turns].
- Toilet paper: [Goes in the toilet / please put it in the lidded bin next to the toilet].
- Close the lid after each use.
Please don't put in
- Wipes, sanitary products, tampons, condoms or diapers. A lidded bin is at [Bin location].
- Water, cleaning products or food scraps.
- [Anything else for your model, e.g. no urine in the solids side].
Keeping it fresh
- The small fan runs all the time to keep air moving and smells away. Please leave it on. Its switch is at [Fan switch location].
- Cover material: [Where spares are kept].
- If you notice a smell, add an extra scoop of cover material and let us know.
Hand washing
- Please wash hands at [Sink or hand wash station location]. Hand sanitizer is at [Location].
You don't need to empty anything
- We take care of emptying and maintenance between stays.
If something goes wrong
- The bowl or urine bottle looks full, the fan stops, or there's a strong smell: text [Host name] at [Host phone].
- [Backup toilet: e.g. a regular toilet is in the main house / outhouse at Location].
Copied. Paste it into your welcome book or message.
Tips
- Leave a short laminated card in the bathroom with the steps; guests won't remember the house manual.
- Check and empty the unit before every stay so guests never deal with a full container.
- Keep spare cover material and say exactly where it is.
- Mention 'sit down every time' clearly; it matters most on urine-separating models.
- Mention the composting toilet in the listing so guests know before they book.

Questions
Do composting toilets smell?
A well-used one with the fan running and enough cover material shouldn't smell much. A strong smell usually means it needs more cover material, emptying or the fan has stopped.
Can toilet paper go in a composting toilet?
It depends on the model. Some handle toilet paper and some don't, so check the manual and tell guests clearly.
Should I ask guests to empty a composting toilet?
No. Emptying is maintenance for the host between stays, not something to ask of guests.
