Baseboard heaters instructions for guests (template)
Electric baseboard heaters are common in older homes, cottages and condos, and each room usually has its own thermostat on the wall or on the heater itself. Guests often don't realize that, and leave the bedrooms cold or the whole place roasting.
This template explains where the controls are, a sensible setting and the clearance rule that keeps curtains and bedding away from the heaters. Fill in each room and whether the dials show numbers or degrees.

Replace anything in [brackets] with your own details.
How the heat works
- Each room has its own heater and thermostat. Turn up only the rooms you're using.
- Thermostats: [Where they are, e.g. on the wall by each door / on the right end of each heater].
- [Dial type, e.g. the dial goes from 1 to 5; 3 is comfortable / set in degrees; we suggest 20°C (68°F)].
- The heaters warm the room slowly. Turning the dial all the way up won't heat it faster.
Room by room
- Living room: [Thermostat location].
- Bedrooms: [Thermostat location].
- Bathroom: [Thermostat location or "heated floor, see the control by the light switch"].
Safety
- Please keep furniture, curtains, bedding, clothes and towels at least [30 cm / 12 inches] from the heaters.
- Please don't dry clothes or shoes on the heaters, or cover them.
- Heaters can be hot to touch. Please keep small children away from them.
- A light burning-dust smell the first time a heater comes on is normal and fades in a few minutes. Any other burning smell is not: turn it off and text us.
When you go out or leave
- When you go out, you can turn the rooms down a little.
- When you leave, please turn each thermostat down to [Checkout setting, e.g. 2 or 15°C / 59°F].
If something goes wrong
- A room won't heat: check the thermostat is turned up, then check [Breaker panel location] for a switched-off breaker labelled [Label].
- Still cold, or a heater smells of burning or makes a buzzing noise: turn it down and text [Host name] at [Host phone].
- Extra blankets: [Location].
Copied. Paste it into your welcome book or message.
Tips
- Label each thermostat with a sticker showing a comfortable setting.
- Arrange furniture and curtains so they're naturally clear of the heaters.
- Leave extra blankets so guests don't push the heat to maximum on cold nights.
- Label the breaker panel clearly; guests can reset a tripped breaker only if they can find it.
- Vacuum the heater fins between stays to cut down on that burning-dust smell.

Questions
How far should furniture be from baseboard heaters?
Keep furniture, curtains and bedding well clear. Check your heater's manual for its clearance; around 30 cm (12 inches) is a cautious guide.
Why does a baseboard heater smell when it first turns on?
Dust on the heating element burns off, which causes a light smell that fades quickly. A strong or lasting burning smell means turn it off and check it.
Can guests leave baseboard heaters on when they go out?
Yes, turned down a little. At checkout, asking guests to turn the heat down is a reasonable, allowed request.
