Oil furnace instructions for guests (template)
With an oil furnace, guests only need the thermostat. The trouble comes when the heat stops on a cold night and someone goes down to the basement and starts pressing the red reset button over and over, which can flood the furnace with oil.
This template keeps guests at the thermostat, explains the emergency switch and the press-once rule, and gives them a clear smell-of-oil or smoke step. Fill in where the furnace, switch and oil tank gauge are.

Using the heat
- The heat is controlled by the thermostat at [Thermostat location].
- To change the temperature: [Steps, e.g. press the up or down arrow]. We find [20°C / 68°F] comfortable.
- The furnace comes on and off by itself. You may hear it start up and the vents blow warm air after a minute or two.
- Please keep vents and radiators clear of furniture and curtains.
The furnace itself
- The furnace is at [Furnace location]. You don't need to touch it.
- Please keep the area around it clear. Nothing should be stored next to it.
- The red switch at [Emergency switch location, e.g. top of the basement stairs] is the furnace's power switch. Please leave it on.
If the heat stops
- Check the thermostat is set to Heat and turned up a few degrees above the room temperature.
- Check the red emergency switch is on.
- If there's still no heat, you can press the reset button on the burner at [Reset button location] once. Please press it only once. Pressing it more can be dangerous.
- If it doesn't start, please text [Host name] at [Host phone] and we'll send someone. Backup heat: [Backup heat, e.g. space heater in the hall closet].
Safety
- Carbon monoxide and smoke alarms: [Alarm locations].
- If you smell oil, smoke or burning, or hear loud banging from the furnace, turn the red emergency switch off and text or call us.
- If a CO or smoke alarm sounds, get everyone outside and call [Local emergency number].
When you leave
- Please set the thermostat to [Checkout setting, e.g. 16°C / 60°F]. Please don't turn the heat off in winter, as pipes can freeze.

Tips
- Label the emergency switch and the reset button with plain-language tags.
- Write 'press reset once only' in the template and on a tag on the burner.
- Keep the oil tank topped up before winter stays and check the gauge between guests.
- Have the furnace serviced every year and fit CO alarms near bedrooms.
- Leave a backup heat source and say where it is for no-heat nights.

Questions
Why shouldn't you press an oil furnace reset button repeatedly?
Each press can send more oil into the combustion chamber. Pressing it many times can build up oil and create a fire or explosion risk, so one press is the limit.
What should guests do if the oil furnace stops?
Check the thermostat and the emergency switch, press reset once at most, then call the host. Running out of oil is a common cause, so check the tank gauge between stays.
Should guests turn the heat off when they leave in winter?
No. Set it low instead, so pipes don't freeze. Turning the heat down at checkout is an allowed ask.
