Gas fireplace instructions for guests (template)
A gas fireplace is easy to use once guests find the switch, remote or wall control, which is usually the hardest part. They also need to know what's normal (a small pilot flame, a short delay, a fan that starts later) and what isn't.
This template covers the controls, the hot-glass warning for families and a clear smell-of-gas step. Fill in your model's switch or remote details and add a photo.

Replace anything in [brackets] with your own details.
Turning it on
- Use [Wall switch / remote / control under the front panel], located at [Location].
- Press [Button or step]. The flame can take a few seconds to light.
- The small blue flame you may see when it's off is the pilot light. That's normal.
- The fan starts on its own after [Number] minutes, once the fireplace is warm.
Adjusting it
- Flame height: [How to adjust, e.g. the up and down arrows on the remote].
- Thermostat: [How it works, or "it has no thermostat; turn it off when the room is warm"].
Turning it off
- Press [Off button / flip the wall switch]. The flames go out within a few seconds.
- Please turn it off when you go out and when you go to bed.
Safety
- The glass front gets very hot and stays hot for a while after it's off. Please keep children and pets away. [Safety screen: Location, if you have one].
- Please don't put anything on top of or in front of the fireplace, including clothes to dry.
- Carbon monoxide and smoke alarms: [Alarm locations].
If you smell gas
- Don't turn the fireplace or any lights or switches on or off, and don't use a lighter.
- Leave the building with everyone, leaving the door open behind you.
- Once you're outside, call [Gas company emergency number] or [Local emergency number], then let us know at [Host phone].
If something goes wrong
- It won't light: wait [Five] minutes and try once more. If it still won't light, please don't try to relight the pilot; text [Host name] at [Host phone].
- A CO alarm sounds: get everyone outside and call [Local emergency number].
Copied. Paste it into your welcome book or message.
Tips
- Photograph the switch or remote; guests often can't find the control at all.
- Mention the pilot flame and fan delay so guests don't think something is wrong.
- Add a safety screen in front of hot glass if you host families with small children.
- Put the gas company's emergency number in the template, not only the general emergency number.
- Have the fireplace serviced every year by a qualified gas technician.

Questions
What should guests do if they smell gas?
Leave the building without touching switches, lighters or appliances, then call the gas company's emergency line or emergency services from outside. Then let the host know.
Is it safe to leave a gas fireplace on overnight?
Follow the manufacturer's manual for your model. For guests, it's simplest and most conservative to ask them to turn it off at bedtime and when they go out.
Why is there a small flame when the gas fireplace is off?
Many gas fireplaces keep a small pilot light burning so the main burner can light. It's normal, and guests shouldn't try to adjust it.
