Garage entry check-in instructions template

Getting in through the garage is handy, especially with luggage or bad weather, but it adds steps: the garage keypad or remote, which side to park on, the inside door that may have its own lock, and remembering to close everything at night.

This template covers each step in order and includes the safety basics, such as checking nothing is under the door and never leaving a car running in a closed garage. Note your garage's clearance height if guests might arrive with roof boxes or tall vehicles.

Replace anything in [brackets] with your own details.

  • Your garage code will arrive by [Day and time the code is sent].

1. Find the place

2. Open the garage

3. Park

  • Please park on the [Side] side. The [Other side] is for [Storage or other use].
  • Clearance is [Clearance height]. Please check roof boxes and bike racks.
  • Turn off your engine once you're parked. Never leave a car running with the garage door closed.

5. Close the garage

  • Press [Wall button location] to close the garage door.
  • Make sure nothing is in the doorway. The door stops if something is in the sensor path, so check the floor if it reverses.
  • Please keep the garage closed overnight and whenever you're out.

6. Coming and going

  • Use the keypad, or the remote in [Remote location].
  • [Opener app, if any].

7. First things inside

  • Lights: [Light switch location]
  • Wifi: [Network name] / [Wifi password]
  • Thermostat: [Thermostat location]

8. Who to call

[Host name]: [Host phone]. If the garage won't open: [Backup entry, e.g. lockbox at the front door, code [Lockbox code]].

Questions

Is it safe to give guests a garage code?

Yes, if you treat it like a door code: unique per booking where your keypad allows, changed between guests and paired with a locked or coded door into the house.

What if the power goes out and guests can't open the garage?

Most garage openers won't work without power. Give guests another way in, like a lockbox at the front door, rather than asking them to use the manual release.

Should the door from the garage into the house be locked?

Many hosts keep it locked or coded so the house stays secure if the garage is left open. Tell guests how it works in your check-in steps.
